Collection: Tamping
Tamping is one of the most critical steps in brewing espresso. Once ground coffee is placed into the portafilter basket, tamping compresses the grounds into a dense, even puck, removing air gaps and preparing it for proper extraction.
A quality tamper ensures water flows evenly through the coffee puck during extraction. Because water always follows the path of least resistance, an uneven or poorly compacted puck can cause channelling, leading to over-extraction in some areas and under-extraction in others. The result is an unbalanced espresso with reduced flavour and body.
Choosing the Right Tamper
Tampers come in various sizes, materials, and designs. Precision-fit tampers are made to closely match your filter basket, reducing uneven pressure around the edges. Most tampers are made from stainless steel, though brass and copper options are also popular for their weight and heat retention.
-
Flat tampers provide an even surface across the puck
-
Convex tampers help push grounds outward to reduce chanelling
-
Calibrated tampers apply consistent pressure, ideal for beginners
-
Stepped-edge tampers maximize basket contact while preventing suction
We also offer tamper kits and sets to take the guesswork out of building your setup.
How to Tamp Correctly
For best results, grind and weigh your coffee, distribute evenly using a distribution tool, then tamp with a straight wrist and level portafilter. Apply firm, even pressure, finishing with a slight twist to polish the puck. Consistency matters more than force — the goal is a level, evenly compacted surface with no gaps.
Manual vs Automatic Tampers
Manual tampers are ideal for home baristas and low-volume use, while automatic tampers are increasingly popular in cafes. Auto tampers deliver consistent pressure, improve workflow, and significantly reduce wrist and hand strain caused by repetitive tamping — an important consideration in busy coffee environments.
At JavaDock, we offer a wide range of espresso tampers and tamping tools to suit both home baristas and professional cafes, helping you achieve consistent, high-quality espresso every time.
